In a disturbing development, two prominent lawyers in Shillong city have reportedly received a threatening letter accompanied by two bullets. The letter, purportedly from unidentified miscreants, warns the lawyers of severe consequences ‘if they continue to represent specific clients or engage in legal proceedings involving said clients’.

The Meghalaya High Court Bar Association convened an emergency meeting in response to the threat. Expressing deep concern over the safety of the two lawyers, the association issued a statement condemning the intimidation tactics employed against them.

During the emergency meeting, members unanimously denounced the threatening letter to the Shillong lawyers as an egregious violation of the lawyers’ professional autonomy and fundamental rights. They emphasised that such acts of intimidation not only undermine the legal profession but also pose a threat to the fabric of civilized society.
