Amid COVID-19, Tripura mulls to reduce syllabus for school students by 30%

Agartala: In a move to ease the trouble for students amid novel coronavirus pandemic, the state board is mulling to reduce the syllabus of Class IX to XII by 30% for 2020-21 academic session, said Bhabatosh Saha, president of Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE).

Speaking with reporters, Saha said: “A meeting will be held with subject committees to take the final decision on the methodology of reducing the syllabus for each subjects.”

He also said that the meeting of the committee is likely to take place on July 15 and would continue till the end of this month.

All the educational institutions including schools, colleges, and universities have been closed since March 16. Tripura has 4,398 government and government-aided schools apart from 335 private schools in which around 5 lakh students are studying across the state.

Earlier, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared to reduce syllabus for Class IX to XII students by 30% owing to the outbreak of coronavirus.

The results of the TBSE madhyamik examination (new syllabus) was declared on July 3 that recorded 69.49 pass percentage this year. However, the results for the madhyamik (old syllabus) students, madrassa alim (new and old syllabus), madrassa fazil Theology and madrassa fazil arts and higher secondary (Class-XII) are yet to be declared.

“The results of the madhyamik (new syllabus) were declared as the examination was over prior to the lockdown, but some papers of the madhyamik (old syllabus), higher secondary and madrassa alim, fazil arts, theology were postponed and later cancelled due to the lockdown”, Saha added.

He also said that the marking for the papers that didn’t go for examination would be done by using the average of highest grades bagged by students from the rest of the papers. The results will be out by the end of July.
