National highway in Margherita, Assam? You must be joking!

Guwahati: As the nation is heading for the people’s mandate to be declared on May 23, with the promise of ‘change’ in the next five years, poor road conditions continue to plague the old National Highway-38 that connects Tirap in Arunachal Pradesh with Ledo in Assam’s Tinsukia district fcr the past three years.

In a shocking outcome of the poor road condition, many vehicles were seen getting stuck on the massive potholes on the road leaving several others stranded for hours in Margherita on Monday. These potholes have also become a threat for the locals as many accidents were reported in the past few days.

Meanwhile, the Journalist Forum of Margherita Constituency has urged the authorities concerned for an immediate solution to the problem. “We feared that vehicular movement might come to a halt on the Jagun-Marherita road due to the big potholes, and the same happened today [Monday] leading to traffic jams on both sides of the road,” said a member of the forum.

“We have been consistently requesting the authorities concerned to start repair works on the roads before the monsoons,” he added.

Daily commuters are also an angry lot. “For the past three years, we have been facing a tough time travelling on the road. It’s a risky proposition for all of us,” said a school teacher from the locality.

The fate of the people in the locality now lies in in the hope that the newly formed government would respond to their grievances when it comes to power.
