A rifleman of Tripura State Rifles fired at two of his colleagues, killing both of them, at Konaban gas collection station under Madhupur PS in Tripura’s Sepahijala district around 9.30 am on Saturday.
According to reports, rifleman Sukanta Das started indiscriminate firing at the post owing to which Subedar Marka Singh Jamatia sustained bullet injuries and died on the spot. Another soldier, Naib Subedar Kiran Jamatia, also sustained a bullet injury and was rushed to GB Hospital in a critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries later.
Das had reportedly applied for leave but was instead detained to undergo refresher training. This is suspected to have triggered his reaction. After firing at his colleagues, the rifleman fled from the spot and later surrendered at Madhupur PS with his arms. He has been arrested and an investigation into the case has begun.
The accused rifleman, during his interrogation, stated that he was not relieved from duties despite his leave getting sanctioned, as his seniors wanted him to take part in a “refresher training” programme.
Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb took to Twitter, sending condolences to the family of the deceased. “My homage to our brave personnel of Tripura State Rifles, Subedar Marka Singh Jamatia & Nb Subedar Kiran Jamatia who died while on duty today. My condolences to bereaved family,” the CM tweeted.
“Tripura govt has decided to give ₹ 5 Lakh each to bereaved families. They will also get benefits under the Die-in-harness scheme,” he wrote in another tweet.
