Tinsukia: On Thursday, a crackdown by the Tinsukia civic board exposed how a few scrap dealers are running their business without obtaining a trade licence.
Talking to EastMojo, executive officer of Tinsukia Municipal Board (TMB) Niluram Sarma said they had been getting information about illegal scrap yards set up in Tinsukia. “Hence, we have launched a verification process to put a check on unpermitted scrap yards and take action against violators.”
“Today, we have asked two scrap dealers to shut down their premises after finding that one of the dealers was operating without any trade licence from TMB while the trade licence of the second scrap dealer has failed and yet to be renewed,” Sarma said and added, “The drive will continue in the coming days.”
When contacted, brother of one of the scrap dealers, R Prasad said, he was not at the premises when the incident took place. “I have just returned and trying to figure out the issue,” he added.
Responding to the allegations regarding trade licence, he said, “I am not aware of any document issue.”
According to reports, illegal scrap trade is going unabated in the district with many dealers operating without any licence. “Some of the scrap yards have turned into a haven for stolen goods as thieves habitually sell stolen materials to scrap dealers. However, some refrain from purchasing stolen goods and follow rule books,” said a source.
According to another source, in the last four to five years, there have been numerous first information reports (FIRs) filed by the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) and Oil India Limited (OIL) with various police stations in the district alleging copper wire theft and pipes respectively. Police complaints regarding thefts at homes and shops are separate.
“The scrap dealers are playing in crores, but several of them hardly maintained any invoices on their purchases or issue sale bills when they sell scrap, thereby, generating GST revenue losses to the government,” a source alleged.
Sources said, if inventories of all unpermitted scrap yards are thoroughly verified, they will throw light on a lot of things.
