Kohima: Assam Rifles Rifleman Methna Konyak, who was reportedly martyred along with two others in an ambush by suspected militants in Manipur’s Chandel district on Wednesday evening, was laid to rest with full military honours in his native town in Mon district.

An official update from the PRO IGAR (N) said that police personnel, President of Konyak Union, President of Konyak Students Union and other well-wishers were present to pay homage to the slain soldier on Saturday.

The mortal remains of the martyr was brought to his hometown on July 31. The braveheart made a supreme sacrifice for the nation while fighting insurgents in Manipur on July 29 at Khongtal area of Manipur’s Chandel district near the India-Myanmar border.

Offering condolences to the bereaved family members, Commandant Mon Battalion assured all necessary support and assistance from Assam Rifles, the update said.

As reported by EastMojo earlier, sources in Assam Rifles confirmed that the incident took place around 6:30 pm when the foot patrolling team of 4th Assam Rifles first came under an IED attack, followed by rampant firing from militants taking shelter in the thick jungle at Khongtal village under Chakpikarong police station.

The site of ambush is around 2 km from the Assam Rifles base, sources said. The three martyred jawans were identified as Havildar Pranay Kalita from Assam, Rifleman Ratan Salam from Manipur and Rifleman Methna Konyak from Nagaland of 4th Assam Rifles.
