Chetia further informed that security forces have fanned out across all the possible exit routes and launched joint operations along with the Indian army to rescue Deb.

The top cop from the district also revealed that security forces suspect the role of United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) militants behind the kidnapping of Deb. “However, there are no reports available of any extortion demand served on the tea estate by ULFA(I) earlier,” Chetia told EastMojo.

Tea estates, especially in parts of upper Assam, have always been a soft target for ULFA(I), where several cases of abduction of staff and extortion have been reported in the recent past.
