Imphal: Joining the rest of the country, the Northeast state of Manipur started its week-long celebrations to mark ‘World Environment Day’ on Wednesday. The theme for this year was ‘Air Pollution’ with deforestation highlighted as one of the major concerns.

People across the state came forward and did their bit to fight against one of the biggest looming environmental threats — ‘global warming’.

From school going students to state officials, scores of people participated in tree plantation drives with an aim to prevent extreme heat, drought, floods and poverty.

During the week-long celebrations, the state government is also planning to launch a campaign known as ‘Green Manipur, Clean Manipur’ with an objective to protect the environment and tackle climate change.
