In a significant move to enhance passenger amenities and improve accessibility at railway stations, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has installed a total of 45 lifts and 35 escalators at its stations as of March 2024. This initiative aims to make stations more passenger-friendly, particularly benefiting the elderly, differently-abled, and those with health issues.
NFR’s efforts to upgrade infrastructure at select stations are designed to facilitate easy movement across platforms, thereby ensuring a smoother and more comfortable travel experience. The newly installed lifts and escalators are part of a broader strategy to upgrade passenger facilities comprehensively.
Currently, major stations under NFR’s five divisions are equipped with these amenities. In the financial year 2023-24, four lifts were added—two each at Barsoi and Jalpaiguri Road railway stations. Additionally, four escalators were installed, with Agartala and Kamakhya stations each receiving two.
