Meghalaya is witnessing a positive trend with a reduction in the maternal mortality rate (MMR). Over the past two years, there has been a significant decrease in MMR, which was previously very high in the state.

A senior official of the Health Department stated on Tuesday that the MMR in 2020-2021 was 243, which was brought down to 228 in 2021-2022. The numbers saw a further decline to 155 in 2022-2023, and in 2023-2024, the MMR has been reduced to 100.

As of 2023-2024, there are 10 districts in Meghalaya with fewer than 10 maternal deaths. Even in East Khasi Hills district, maternal deaths have reduced significantly, from 84 in 2021-2022 to 23 in 2023-2024.
