Imphal: A powerful improvised explosive device (IED) reportedly detonated in Kangpokpi district on Wednesday, causing significant damage to a bridge situated along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway 2.
The incident occurred just two days prior to the second phase of the 18th Lok Sabha election in the remaining 13 segments for the outer seat in Manipur.
According to initial reports, the explosion occurred around 12:45 am at Thonggaibi bridge, situated between Saparmeina and Koubru Leikha villages. The force of the blast created three craters in the centre of the Imphal-Dimapur bridge, leading to disruptions in vehicular traffic, particularly for heavy vehicles.
