According to locals, vehicle movement between Imphal and Jiribam along the National Highway 37 was cut off after the bailey bridge near Taobam village under the Haochong sub-division in Noney district collapsed around 1:30 pm due to soil erosion amid heavy downpours in the last couple of days in the area.

The CRPF personnel’s timely intervention in stopping all vehicles from both sides ensured major accidents were averted at the bridge, said locals.

Apart from passenger vehicles and private cars, over 30 trucks, including 15 loaded trucks, are stranded along the National Highway after the bridge collapsed.

Meanwhile, vehicles along the affected highway have been advised to diverge from Rengpang village via old Kachar Road, crossing Khoupum valley and Bishnupur.

The incessant rainfall has wreaked havoc in many parts of Manipur, causing huge inconveniences to normal life.
