Imphal: Manipur has been witnessing a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases ever since the state came under the second wave of the pandemic. Since the start of May, there has been a massive spike in fresh cases, especially in the Imphal area, along with fatalities due to the coronavirus.
However, the latest COVID-19 update issued by the state’s Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) on Monday caused apprehension among the public despite the number of recovery persons surpassing the fresh cases for the first time since last month.
On Monday, 455 persons were discharged from various hospitals and COVID-19 care centres, while 330 fresh COVID-19 cases and 14 deaths due to the coronavirus were reported in the state.
Most samples of COVID-19 in the state are tested at the VRDL in JNIMS and VRDL in RIMS. However, on Monday, the number of test results received and the number of positive cases from VRDL in JNIMS was shown as ‘zero’, which was unusual considering the ongoing situation.
To clarify the doubts of the public, EastMojo tried to reach out to the JNIMS management but they were not available for comment.
However, according to sources from the health department, the doctor conducting tests at the facility in JNIMS has contracted COVID-19 and is under home isolation. Evidently, there would be no test result from JNIMS’ VRDL on Tuesday as well, the sources said.
Also, since the VRDL machine is a specialised one and unlike the others, it is difficult to replace the infected official, the sources added.
Meanwhile, the Imphal East chief medical officer informed that due to some staff working at VRDL in JNIMS testing positive for COVID-19, a sanitisation drive was carried out in the last three days (May 15, 16, and 17) at the VRDL room in JNIMS.
At present, there are four staff working under one specialised doctor at JNIMS’ VRDL, of which two tested positive for COVID-19, the sources said.
So far, a total of 1,10,641 samples have tested for COVID-19 at VRDL, JNIMS, of which 9,011 have tested positive for COVID-19. Similarly, VRDL, RIMS has received 1,15,704 cumulative samples, of which 5,727 have tested positive for COVID-19 so far.
