Guwahati: After the state of Nagaland, the Centre announced on Thursday the extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 in certain regions of Arunachal Pradesh for an additional six months, starting from April 1.

As per a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the extension applies to “three districts and the areas falling under the jurisdictions of three police stations in another district of Arunachal Pradesh for six months from April 1.”

Specifically, the districts of Tirap, Changlang, and Longding, along with the regions under the jurisdiction of Namsai, Mahadevpur, and Chowkham police stations in Namsai district, bordering Assam, have been designated as “disturbed areas” where the AFSPA remains in force.

AFSPA was renewed for eight districts in Nagaland, designating them as “disturbed areas” under Section 3 of AFSPA.

The Act empowers the armed forces and Central Armed Police Forces deployed in these “disturbed areas” with the authority to take necessary actions, including lethal force, against those who violate the law.

It grants them the right to conduct arrests and searches without a warrant and offers protection from legal proceedings without prior approval from the Central government.
