Agartala: Three youths were arrested on the charge of attempting to murder Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb, among other charges, the police said on Saturday.
The trio drove a car through the security cordon of the chief minister when he was out on evening walk near his official residence at Shyamaprasad Mukerjee Lane in Agartala on Thursday, they said.
Deb managed to jump aside as the vehicle whisked past him, but one of his security personnel sustained minor injuries, they added.
The Tripura CM’s security tried to intercept the car but could not, the police said.
The incident took place when they reached Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital Chowmuhani.
The three youths were arrested late on Thursday from Kerchowmuhani and the vehicle seized, they said.
The trio inside the car with registration number TR01-0356 were identified as Subham Saha (27), Aman Saha (25) and Gairik Ghosh (24). All three were arrested on charges of rash driving, obstructing government servants on duty, willfully injuring public servants and attempt to murder the Tripura CM.
Tripura CM has Z+ security cover since he received threat calls from Myanmar-based international drug mafia in 2018 after he ordered to break the smuggling racket in the state.
“Currently, Tripura has restrictions on movement of people in the evening under night curfew restrictions. The vehicle was being driven well past the curfew hours. The police are investigating all aspects to ascertain the reason behind the incident that took place on Thursday,” a police officer said.
Speaking with reporters, assistant public prosecutor Bidyut Sutradhar said that the three accused were sent to 14 days’ judicial custody till August 19.
“The three youths had bypassed the security and were found to be driving rashly as they passed through the security of the Tripura CM. The court has permitted the police to interrogate the three accused for two days,” Sutradhar said.
