Imphal: Some of the leading women civil bodies in Imphal on Wednesday strongly condemned the reported sexual harassment against a woman allegedly by some jawans of Assam Rifles that took place at Khudengthabi check-post in Manipur’s Chandel district on November 18.
In a statement issued by Hmar Women Association, Zomi Mothers’ Association and Kuki Women Union under the banner of Churachandpur Joint Women Organisation said that a woman from M Chahnou village of Moreh was allegedly molested by personnel of 12 Assam Rifles on the pretext of frisking and checking on November 18.
According to the release, the victim, along with a driver, was travelling in a vehicle when they were stopped by four personnel (including two women) of Assam Rifles at the Khudengthabi check-point.
The release alleged that the victim was soon whisked away by the AR personnel in a white-coloured car leaving behind the driver. After reaching an isolated place, the woman was asked to undress at gunpoint.
The personnel forcibly undressed the victim after she refused to do so and the whole incident was captured on camera by them, the release alleged.
Later, the victim, as per sources, was rushed and examined at Moreh Hospital where the medical report indicated “injury mark on the left wall” and “bleeding point on the right wall” of her private parts.
“We demand justice for the victim and stand in solidarity with the victim in her fight against the violation of her rights and harassment,” the released said.
The women bodies further stated that such an act with the intent of outraging modesty is a serious sexual abuse and crime against women and personnel involved in the crime must be booked at the earliest. Failing to do so will lead to agitations and even storming of the 12 AR camp, the release added.
