Imphal: Due to a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state, Manipur University on Thursday announced that the university hostels would be closed as a preventive measure. The decision followed a meeting of the dean with the heads of departments and centre directors.

The hostellers must vacate the hostels at the earliest, stated university registrar Professor W Chandbabu Singh.

Earlier, the university also announced the postponement of the 1st and 3rd semesters examinations for BA, BSc, BCom, BSW and BTT. They were scheduled to commence on April 28.

A fresh schedule of the BA, BSc, BCom, BSW and BTT 1st and 3rd semesters examinations, 2020 shall be notified at least seven days before the commencement of the examination, said Prof Ng Nimai Singh, in charge of the controller of examination of the university.

Given the ever-increasing positive cases of coronavirus and the impending threats, the Manipur Board of Secondary Education had already postponed the board exams for Class 10 and 12 for this academic session scheduled to begin on May 5. Class 10 board exams were supposed to start on May 6.

Moreover, physical classes for students studying at Class 11 and 12 were also suspended with immediate effect. Besides, coaching centres, boarding and hostels in schools and private hostels accommodating students were also shut down immediately due to the current spike in COVID-19 cases in the state.
