Left-backed student organizations Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Tribal Students Union (TSU) on Wednesday organised a protest demonstration in Tripura.
The two student bodies were protesting against the government’s decision to privatise the state’s education system.
The Tripura government had in October decided to hand over government schools to the private sector due to low presence of students in government-run schools.
“Through this policy, several schools that were established after various efforts…the
fairy tale of government education will be destroyed. Meanwhile, in the days to come, education will turn into an expensive commodity,” said Sandeep Biswas, Secretary, Tripura Unit, Students’ Federation of India.
“The state government, through its anti-student policies, is conspiring to send the education system of the state to its grave. We will not bear or accept such policies.
We voice our opposition to moves that will commercialise and turn education into business,” the state secretary of the SFI added.
While burning copies of the policy during the protest, the student organisations also demanded the withdrawal of the policy.
