Agartala: Tripura ruling BJP MLA Ashish Das from Surma Assembly shaved his head on Tuesday and offered prayers at Kolkata’s Kalighat temple as a mark of penance for joining the ruling party. He said he has resigned from the post of MLA.

Tripura Assembly Speaker Ratan Chakraborty, however, said he was not aware of Das’s resignation as MLA. “I have not yet received any letter from Ashish Das resigning as MLA,” he said.

Reacting to the BJP MLA’s atonement at Kalighat, BJP’s state spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya said the situation in Tripura was not like West Bengal.

“Good luck to him. May his good intellect rise, I pray. I heard comments from MLA Ashish Das about the BJP from the media. Unlike Bengal, anti-party laws are in force in Tripura. The party leadership is taking all necessary information in this regard. The team will decide about him shortly,” Bhatttacharya said.

MLA Ashish Das has been rebellious for some time, making anti-party comments on various issues, as well as pointing fingers at Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.

While speculation has been rife about Das wanting to quit the BJP for some time, he went to Kalighat in West Bengal on Tuesday and worshiped with his tonsured head while making anti-BJP comments.

Today marks the beginning of a new political chapter, Ashish Das said

Das claimed that his act was to atone for joining the communal party that is BJP, and vowed to remain hair-less until the 2023 Assembly Elections.

“Today marks the beginning of a new political chapter. However, I have not yet decided which party to join,” Das said.

However, speculation is rife that Das was likely to join the TMC on the auspicious day of Mahalaya on Wednesday while holding the hand of TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee.

Last week, Das was seen praising West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee while projecting her as the next prime ministerial candidate from the opposition after her massive win in the by-election.

He also visited the TMC party office earlier this week, though he refuted any reports of joining the party.
