UEFA round of 16

Trust officials to get something as simple as a UEFA draw round of 16 wrong. Fans had already started trending discussions around Messi vs Ronaldo, Atletico taking on German champions Bayern Munich and Liverpool and Chelsea getting easy draws against RB Salzburg and Lille respectively.

Not happening, said UEFA. The UEFA draw round of 16 had to be done twice.

The controversy was the result of Manchester United appearing to be excluded from the teams eligible to face Atlético in the UEFA draw round of 16.

United initially drew against Villareal, whom they met during the group stage. So, they were therefore unable to meet in the last 16.

UEFA officials corrected the mistake and former Arsenal striker Andrey Arshavin pulled Manchester City’s name from the bowl. In the draw for the next tie against Atlético, UEFA incorrectly stated that United had already been drawn, and their ball did not appear to be placed in the bowl with those eligible to play Atletico Madrid.

Subsequently, the redraw took place. The new draw is as follows:

RB Salzburg vs Bayern Munich

Sporting Club de Portugal vs Manchester City

Benfica vs Ajax

Chelsea vs Lille

Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United

Villareal vs Juventus

Inter vs Liverpool

PSG vs Real Madrid
