Karatekas from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have made the entire North East proud by getting selected to participate in the upcoming Khelo India University Games.
Among the Assam players, two are from Gauhati University and one is from Dibrugarh University. The players are Janmoni Das (Gauhati University), Emon Gogoi (Dibrugarh University) and Chandani Jain (Gauhati University). All three players are members of Assam State Karate Association under Assam Olympics.
From Arunachal Pradesh, Kyabo Liyang, Doni Neri, Agung Paffa, Lokum Maya (Himalayan University), Sanjay Gamnu, Samem Romet, Yame Gyadi, Yaki Dignium (Rajiv Gandhi University), Abab Sangdo, Yana Bagang (Arunodaya University) have been selected. In Team Kumite Girls section, Reyum Hagi, Karsang Yanga, Yaki Dignium and Charu Aniya will represent Anunachal Pradesh’s Rajiv Gandhi University as a team.
KIUG ’22 is set to be organized at the Jain Global Campus, Jain Sports School, Sri Kanteerava Stadium (Indoor & Outdoor), Hockey Stadium and SAI Shooting Range in Bengaluru. The tentative dates of the Khelo India University Games ’22 have been announced as April 24 to May 3. Over 8,500 participants under the age of 26 from around 200 universities across India are expected to participate in the 2nd edition of the Khelo India University Games.
After the superhit editions of the Khelo India School Games in 2018 and the Youth Games in 2019 and 2020, the first edition of the Khelo India University Games was held in 2020 in Odisha. The sport events were held at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, JNL Indoor Stadium, SAI-Odisha Badminton Academy and SAI International Residential School in Cuttack.
Punjab University had finished first with 46 total medals that included 17 gold, 19 silver and 10 bronze medals. Savitribai Phule Pune University and Punjab University were second and third with 37 and 33 total medals, respectively.
The upcoming 2nd edition was initially supposed to be held in 2021 but had to be postponed due to the global pandemic.
