Kohima: The 60th general session of the Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako (YAA), apex student body of the Yimkhiung Naga community, began at Shamator, near the India–Myanmar border, with a call for unity among Nagas living across international boundaries.
Achumbemo Kikon, MLA and Chairman of the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB), Bhandari, and Secretary General of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), attended the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Yimkhiung students’ body as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Kikon stressed the importance of Naga unity, stating that Nagas from Myanmar to various Naga-inhabited regions share the same identity despite being divided by artificial international borders. He said no Naga is forward or backward, adding that such distinctions exist only in human mindset.
He urged the students to reflect on their role in strengthening society and fostering unity, and encouraged them to make responsible choices in their daily lives. Emphasising the changing global scenario, Kikon called upon the youth to shoulder greater responsibility and contribute positively towards building a better future.
The MLA also appealed to the people of Shamator to cooperate in the development of the district headquarters, underlining that cleanliness and collective responsibility are essential for sustainable growth.
During the programme, Kikon unveiled the 60th Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako Diamond Jubilee monolith along with the Golden Jubilee monolith.
The general session has drawn a large gathering of Yimkhiung students from the India–Myanmar border areas to the western zones of Nagaland.
The event also showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Yimkhiung community through traditional performances presented by the Western Yimkhiung Students’ Union.
