The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India, is an attached Office of Ministry of Home Affairs, having its Head Office at New Delhi with 28 Directorates in States and 6 in UTs.

A press note issued by Directorate of Census Operations Assam says the next Census in the series, 16th Decennial Census, was to be conducted in 2021.

However, due to the out-break of COVID-19 pandemic, the proposed field work for both the Phases of Census 2021 and other related field activities have been postponed.

“The ensuing Census will be the first digital Census in the country. It was also mentioned that data will be collected in the ensuing Census for the first time through mobile app,” it said.

“Facility for self-enumeration shall also be available in the ensuing Census. This will not only reduce the time taken in release of Census results, but will also judiciously restrict the cost of conducting Census,” it said.

The newly-inaugurated building will play an important role not only in conduct of Census in Assam but also for the entire North-East region. It shall act as the focal centre for scanning and mapping activities for the entire North-East region.

Amit Shah also inaugurated the newly revamped website of Census India. It was mentioned that the new website comes with advanced features like ‘population finder’, data visualizations and shall assist people in easy access to Census data.

A language atlas was also launched at the event.

The Home Minister spoke about the vastness of the work done during the Census. To conduct such a huge exercise, proper environment and space is required. He also mentioned about the importance of effective and informative website for the people.

The work for construction of Office building DCO, Assam, was entrusted to WAPCOS Ltd, a Government of India Undertaking under the aegis of Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, at a total cost of Rs.31.15 Crores by this office.

The architecture of newly-constructed office building has been designed in such a manner so as to accommodate DCO, Assam as well as Store-cum-Scanning centre of all NE States including Sikkim.
