Imphal: A 180-feet-long Bailey bridge in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, which connects Manipur with Mizoram, collapsed on Monday.
As per reports, the bridge, which is the lifeline of the area, had two goods-laden heavy trucks on it when it collapsed. However, no casualty was reported in the accident.
Situated between Khuanggin-Sinzawl village along National Highway 102 B and about 135 km from the district headquarters, the bailey bridge was constructed in 1994. It was recently repaired, as the highway is still under construction.
G Thiankholian, chief of the area of Songtal village, has asked the general manager of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), which is presently working on double-laning of NH-102 B or Guite Road, as it is locally known.
The village chief has urged the NHIDCL for immediate steps to repair or restore the bridge as early as possible.
The NHIDCL is already constructing a new bridge along the same road before the Bailey bridge collapsed. In the meantime, a temporary route has been arranged for locals to commute.
