Meghalaya: Govt constitutes regional committees for second phase of border settlement
Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong will head the Ri Bhoi Regional Committee

Shillong: Meghalaya power minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday informed that the government has decided to cancel the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed with Athena Power Private Limited and JayPee Group for the construction of Kynshi stage 1 and Kynshi stage 2 Hydro Electric Power Project.

Tynsong said it was based on the project developers expressing their inability to continue, and that they have surrendered.

“We had invited all private developers as well as central government undertaking developers, with whom the government had signed the MOA back in 2007. In the review meeting, some project developers expressed their inability to continue or push forward as they found it not feasible. So we decided to cancel the MOA,” said Tynsong.

The Kynshi stage 1 project was signed with Athena Power Private Limited and Stage-II with JayPee Group.

The power minister informed that the MoA signed in 2012 with NEEPCO Shillong for Wah Umiam stage III is at an advanced stage. “The land acquisition is in full swing, and once it is completed, the concerned district collector will hand over the land and the project will start very soon,” said Tynsong.

When asked the reason stated by these developers, Tynsong said, “These are all private developers so when they went down to the ground and sought clearance from the Forest and Environment Ministry it was found that the belt touches the Uranium deposit.”
