Imphal: Doctors at Shija Hospital and Research Institute (SHRI) in Imphal have successfully removed a large kidney stone weighing at least 140 grams and measuring 8×6 cm from a patient through a keyhole surgery (laparoscopically) instead of conducting a major surgery.

According to the hospital’s official Facebook page, a 54-year-old woman with a history of diabetes came with complaints of abdominal pain in Urology OPD at the hospital.

Initial examination of the patient revealed that she has a gall bladder stone and a large stone (staghorn calculus) in her left kidney, said the hospital.

After assessing her health condition and stabilising the blood sugar, the patient underwent surgery under general anesthesia on January 5, it said.

The team led Dr Somorendro Paonam, consultant urologist and renal transplant surgeon, successfully removed the large stone from the left kidney of the patient using minimally invasive procedure that causes less pain and less loss of blood, informed the hospital.

They also removed the patient’s gall bladder by using the same surgery method.

Dr Paonam stated that keyhole surgery leaves minimal scar, causes minimal pain, has faster post-operative recovery, greater patient satisfaction and early return to work.

On January 9, the patient was discharged after the health condition was gradually improved with treatment.

The patient and family, who were shocked to see the size of the stone, appreciated the hospital and the team. Moreover, the patient expressed her gratitude for facilitating the surgery under the chief minister’s health insurance scheme (CMHT).

Kidney stones, also known as nephrolith or renal calculi, are made up of chemicals that should be passed out from the body through urine. They can be extremely painful, and can lead to infections or even damage to the kidneys if left untreated.

Symptoms include severe pain at the side of abdomen, burning during urination, nausea or vomiting.
