Gangtok: The temperature dip on December 29 had most parts of Sikkim freezing, as snowfall and rain was recorded across the state. State capital Gangtok recorded its lowest temperature at 2.8 degree Celsius, its lowest since 2018 December. It was also the third-lowest recorded temperature since 1985, when Gangtok recorded -1.7 degree Celsius on December 28.

Over the past decade, 2017 December was the warmest, when the lowest recorded temperature was 7.3 degree Celsius. Every other year since 2012, the lowest recorded temperatures has been below 6 degree Celsius.

The cold dip was noticed in every other place in Sikkim, but recorded in only a few prominent places by the Indian Meteorological Department, Gangtok.

When compared with Gangtok, Tadong, a town close to the state capital, recorded 6.8 degree Celsius as its lowest temperature on December 29. Further downhill, Ranipool, which serves as the gateway town to Gangtok, recorded 9.3 degree Celsius as its lowest temperature.

The airport town of Pakyong recorded 4.5 degree Celsius. The chill was low here not owing to the altitude, but more due to cold winds blowing from Tsomgo and Nathula in East Sikkim.

Mangan in North Sikkim recorded 5.4 degree Celsius, the low altitude of the town ensured a higher temperature in comparison to Lachung and Lachen, which received several inches of snow. Many tourists and vehicles are reportedly stranded in the two tourist hamlets with temperatures below zero.

Gyalshing in West Sikkim recorded 4 degree Celsius as its minimum temperature, with many areas in the district also recording snowfall.

However, the state reported clear skies and sunny day on December 30, which IMD suggested could carry on for the next few days.
