Imphal: Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Manipur state president Saikhom Tikendra Singh passed away late on Thursday night at Shija Hospital here due to COVID-19 complications.
Singh tested positive for COVID-19 on April 27. The same day, he took to his Facebook page urging all people who came in close contact with him in the last few days to get tested for COVID-19.
“I have tested positive for COVID-19 after having mild fever without cough for last few days. I am fine and self-quarantine at home,” he said in the Facebook post.
The BJP president was undergoing treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Hospital from April 30 till Thursday morning. Later, he was admitted to Shija Hospital for further treatment.
According to press statement issued by Shija Hospital, Singh was admitted to the hospital at 11:15 am on Thursday. On admission, he fell unconscious with a very low BP of 80/40 mmHg, and on maximum does of two medicines to raise the BP, it said.
By then, he had not passed in urine overnight, it added.
The BJP president was then rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where immediate dialysis was started and all necessary medications were given, it said. Repeat test for COVID-19 turned out positive, and he succumbed at 7:40 pm in spite of all efforts, the release stated.

Soon after the news of his passing away, several leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah and Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh expressed their condolences.
“Saddened by the demise of Prof S Tiken Singh, president of BJP Manipur. He will be remembered as a hardworking Karyakarta who strengthened the party in Manipur. He was active in many social service initiatives. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti,” wrote PM Modi on his Twitter handle.
“Pained to learn about BJP Manipur state president, Shri S Tikendra Singh Ji’s demise. He made sincere efforts to strengthen the BJP in the state of Manipur. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Om Shanti Shanti, “ said Amit Shah.
Similarly, CM Biren Singh also wrote that “I’m at a loss of word to learn that Prof S Tiken Singh, President BJP Manipur, had passed away just a while ago. We have lost a stalwart of BJP Manipur who have dedicated his life for the service of people and the party. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. RIP Oja.”
