Belonia: At least 15 persons were left injured in a clash between the ruling BJP and its ally the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) supporters, while three motorbikes were gutted in fire in Maniran Bari in South Tripura district on Friday.
The incident took place at Maniram Bari Bazaar ADC Village in Hrishyamukh Assembly constituency.
The BJP leaders have filed a case against the attackers at the police station. The injured are currently undergoing treatment at Hrishyamukh Hospital.
The Moniram Bari area of the Hrishyamukh Assembly belongs to the Bhulatali ADC constituency. Dhananjay Tripura is the BJP-backed IPFT nominee at the Centre.
Sources said BJP-backed independent candidate Rocky Victor Tripura convened a campaign rally at Shiv Charan Tripura’s house in Moniram Bari on Friday which started at noon.
Reportedly, upon receiving the news, a group of pro-IPFT activists carried out a sudden attack on the independent candidates meeting which left 15 BJP activists injured in the attack.
BJP leader Tapas Baidya was referred to Gomati District Hospital in critical condition. Besides, two BJP workers, Ratan Bal and Biswajit Roy are undergoing treatment at Hrishyamukh Hospital, while the rest were discharged fafter initial treatment.
The source said three bikes were burnt and six were vandalised in the clash. Upon receiving the news, a large police force including Belonia Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Saumya Debbarma and fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.
However, the clash between BJP-IPFT has gripped tension in the entire area. A large police force was deployed at the scene. BJP has filed a case against IPFT in the police station.
