Guwahati: The state government has decided to set up Birangana Sati Sadhani State University at Golaghat soon.
Announcing this, Assam minister for education Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the university would be set up to commemorate the last queen of the Chutia dynasty, Sati Sadhani.
“When the Bogibeel bridge was constructed there was a demand to name the bridge Sati Sadhani. However, the Bogibeel name became popular and the name got stuck,” said Sarma as the House passed the “Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Biswavidyalaya act”.
“We had discussions with members of the Chutia community as to how to keep the memory of the brave Chutia queen alive and bring forth to the new generation. With much deliberations we decided on setting up a new university in the state in her name,” added Dr Sarma.
“Golaghat district hasn’t had many academic institutions. Our government had earlier established an engineering college and now we have proposed to set up the Birangana Sati Sadhani State University in the district,” stated the state Cabinet minister.
Speaking on the curriculum of this newly proposed university, Dr Sarma stated that it would follow the new guidelines of the new National Education Policy (NEP) that was implemented in the country earlier this year.
“This state university will be the first to be established after the implementation of the National Education Policy. So we will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach following the objectives of the NEP.”
Meanwhile, Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, has expressed his gratitude to all the members of the House for passing “Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Biswavidyalaya Bill”.
Speaking on the floor of the House, Sonowal said, “We at this House have always valued the preservation of our Assamese community and our rich culture and heritage. The passage of this bill will uphold the values of this House and I’m grateful to every members present in the House, who have supported the introduction of this bill.”
