Imphal: Moirangthem Okendro, who was a state minister during the Okram Ibobi Singh-led Congress regime in Manipur, has been named as the new chief of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC). Okendra replaced veteran leader Gaikhangam Gangmei as the new president of the state unit of the Congress.

The formal announcement was made by interim party chief Sonia Gandhi after discussions were held with leaders of the state unit on October 23.

In an official statement, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge KC Venugopal said that Congress president has appointed Okendro as the president of Manipur Congress with immediate effect.

Okendro, who is the son of late M Ibotombi, was the education and home minister during the Ibobi-led Congress government.

Okendro, 53, is a four-time MLA from Heirok constituency. He was first elected as an MLA in 1995 and retained his seat in the consecutive years 2000, 2007 and 2012.

Apart from Manipur, the party high command also appointed former Delhi Speaker Subhash Chopra as the president of its unit in the national capital. The post had been lying vacant since former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit’s demise in July this year.

Moreover, as per report, ahead of the general elections early next year, Kirti Azad has been appointed as the chairperson of the Delhi unit’s campaign committee.
