Kohima: Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Thursday shared the urgency of addressing the longstanding border issue with Assam to rectify historical injustices and protect Nagaland’s territorial integrity.
Speaking on the matter during the third day of the ongoing Assembly session, Rio emphasised the need for a concerted effort and proactive measures to safeguard the state’s borders.
In his concluding remarks, Chief Minister Rio acknowledged the complexity of the situation and highlighted the shared responsibility between Assam and Nagaland in addressing the border issue.
He noted that while Assam bears some responsibility, Nagaland has also been at fault for neglecting the matter due to its focus on Naga political affairs over the years.
Rio stressed the importance of rectifying this oversight and reclaiming territories rightfully belonging to Nagaland. He expressed confidence in the legitimacy of Nagaland’s claims, citing compelling historical evidence collected by his government.
Despite encroachments, he noted that Nagas remained preoccupied with internal affairs, particularly discussions surrounding the Naga political issue.

Rio emphasised the need for proactive engagement and collective action to assert Nagaland’s rightful claims and protect its territorial boundaries for future generations. He called for unity and concerted efforts to address the border issue effectively.
Further, Rio said that the suggestion of enhancing the allocation for Border Areas will be examined. At the same time, he urged all the developmental departments to ensure that they also allocate their resources to develop necessary infrastructure and utilities in the Border Areas.
