Aizawl: The Health & Family Welfare Department issued an alert following a significant increase in snakebite cases across various districts in Mizoram. According to the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) report, there were 198 reported cases of snakebites from January 2024 to date. Out of these, 142 required hospitalization, and 135 were treated in government hospitals.

The Health Department noted that the monsoon season contributes to a rise in snakebite incidents and urged the public to exercise caution, especially during the night. They advised individuals to use torchlights and recommended that farmers wear protective gear, cover their bodies well, and thoroughly clear their farm areas. Residents were also encouraged to ensure there were no rats in their surroundings, as these can attract snakes, and to use mosquito nets to help prevent bites.

In response to the rising number of snakebite cases, the department conducted training sessions for doctors and nursing officers on snakebite management at various Mizoram government hospitals in June 2024.

Updated treatment protocols were emphasized for use in hospitals. A live telecast on snakebite awareness was broadcasted on Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) on August 19, 2024, in collaboration with the MZU Zoology Department and the Health Department.

This program was also made available on YouTube. Additionally, the IHIP daily report system continued to monitor snakebite cases, providing detailed clinical studies and data analysis to improve understanding and response.
