Aizawl: Cyclone Remal has left a devastating mark on the northeastern state of Mizoram, resulting in the deaths of 23 individuals and numerous others missing due to catastrophic landslides. The cyclone, which struck with unprecedented force, has caused significant destruction and displacement across the state.
As of 4 PM today, official government reports confirm that 13 people have perished in Melthum. Among the deceased, nine were local Mizos and four were non-locals. The search and rescue operations are ongoing, with nine individuals still unaccounted for, feared to have been washed away by the landslide.
In Hlimen, six fatalities have been reported, including two locals and four non-locals. The Salem locality witnessed the tragic washing away of a house belonging to a family of three. Additionally, one fatality has been confirmed in Falkawn.
The cyclone has claimed the lives of people of all ages, including young children. A particularly heart-wrenching tragedy struck a family of five, who were all confirmed dead. Their funeral was held at Dinthar locality at 3 PM on Tuesday. The deceased family members include 66-year-old Lalduhthlanga, his daughters 20-year-old Dorothy Lalruatkimi and 36-year-old Babie Zoremsiami, along with Babie Zoremsiami’s children, 4-year-old Abel Lalmalsawma and 14-year-old Gloria Malsawmdawngkimi.
Adding to the calamity, a hospital has also been affected by the landslide. Dr. Lalrina Jahau from Trinity Hospital reported that their transformer was washed away, forcing the facility to rely on a generator. Due to concerns that the power supply may not be sufficient, two ICU patients have been relocated to ensure their safety.
The state government and disaster response teams as well as NGO volunteers are working tirelessly to manage the aftermath of the cyclone, conducting search and rescue missions, and providing aid to the affected populations. The Chief Minister has expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and has assured that all necessary measures are being taken to assist those impacted by this natural disaster.
