Nirupam Chakma appointed as Member of National Commission for ST

Aizawl: Nirupam Chakma, a politician from Mizoram, has been appointed as a Member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST). The official announcement came on Saturday, following a letter of notification issued by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.

The letter, enclosing the Warrant of Appointment issued on 8th March, 2024, by the Hon’ble President of India, states, “By virtue of the power vested in me under clause (3) of Article 338A of the Constitution of India, I Droupadi Murmu, President of India, do hereby appoint Shri Nirupam Chakma to be the member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes with effect from the date he assumes charge of office.”

Nirupam Chakma, a seasoned political figure, has an impressive background in Mizoram politics. Elected five times as a Member of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly, he has also served as the Minister of State for a decade. In 2020, he added another feather to his cap by being elected as the National Council Member of BJP Mizoram Pradesh.

BJP National Spokesperson, Mmhonlumo Kikon took to X to extend his congratulations to Chakma on his appointment writing, “Heartiest congratulations to BJP MDC of CADC, Mizoram & 5 time MLA & former Minister Shri. @NirupamChakma4ji on your new appointment as Member of National Commission for Scheduled Tribe. It’s a great day for the state of Mizoram as well! I thank Hon PM @narendramodiji for ensuring representation of every section of the society in the right institutions!
