Meghalaya: Landslide forces closure of Shillong-Dawki road

Shillong: The East Khasi Hills district administration has ordered the immediate closure of the Shillong-Dawki Road beyond Laitlyngkot village following a major landslide that has completely cut off the road at Chainage 25+200.

According to a notification issued by Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal , information received from authorities indicated that the landslide has rendered the stretch ahead of Laitlyngkot village inaccessible. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has informed the district administration that repair and restoration work is expected to take several days.

In view of public safety and to prevent any untoward incidents, the district administration has directed that the road from Laitlyngkot village onwards will remain closed to both vehicular and public movement with immediate effect and until further orders.

The administration has also advised residents, commuters and tourists to avoid travelling along the Shillong-Dawki Road during the closure period.

As an alternative, travellers have been asked to use the Shillong–Sohra–Sohbar–Dawki route or the Shillong–Jowai–Amlarem–Dawki route.

The district administration has urged commuters to follow diversion routes and directions issued by police, traffic personnel and NHIDCL officials, plan their journeys in advance, and allow for additional travel time. Citizens have also been advised to follow weather alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and dial 112 in case of emergencies.

The administration expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and sought public cooperation to ensure smooth traffic management and public safety.
