Tura: Tura MDC and BJP spokesperson, Bernard N Marak, has written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, urging the establishment of camps to accommodate Garo, Khasi, and other tribal groups displaced by the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.
“I request you to kindly set up camps for the Garo, Khasi, and other tribals entering India from Bangladesh and provide them with rehabilitation on humanitarian grounds. The crisis in Bangladesh has led to the loss of many innocent lives, and those crossing the border are risking being caught and shot,” Bernard stated in his letter.
The BJP MDC emphasized the need to identify and rehabilitate those who have crossed into India, suggesting that these individuals be housed in camps until the situation in Bangladesh stabilises.
“There are many tribals, including Garos, in Bangladesh. If they seek refuge in our state, they should be rehabilitated and deported back once the tension subsides,” Marak added.
He also highlighted the traditional ‘Mahari‘ system among the Garos, suggesting that it could play a key role in identifying, rehabilitating, and eventually deporting these displaced individuals.
“All Maharis have chatchis (clans) in Bangladesh, and in this time of crisis, the victims should be rehabilitated rather than leaving them to face torture, ravage, and death,” Bernard asserted.
