Shillong: The Meghalaya government has sanctioned approximately Rs 10 crore for the improvement and upgradation of the Riangdo Playground. The estimated time for completion of the project is 18 months.
Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, announced this during the laying of the Foundation Stone for the Artificial Football Turf at Riangdo Playground, West Khasi Hills.
Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the importance of the Riangdo football field, not only for the local community but also for adjoining areas. He expressed awareness that the ground, despite being a vital asset, has seen no improvement investment in 52 years.
Sangma emphasised the government’s commitment to youth development and noted that, in the last five years, more stadiums and infrastructures were constructed than in the preceding 45 years combined.
Praising the success of the Meghalaya football team in the Khelo India Youth Games, where the Under-18 Football Team triumphed over Punjab, Chief Minister Sangma termed it a proud moment for the state. He underscored the need for the government to provide support through infrastructure, financial assistance, and policies to enable the youth to excel in various disciplines.
Chief Minister Sangma expressed hope that the annual Meghalaya Games could be hosted in West Khasi Hills in the future, contingent upon the readiness of the infrastructures. He outlined the government’s strategy to host the Meghalaya Games in different districts to create varied sports facilities for the youth, fostering their interests in sports.

The Chief Minister detailed the various financial assistance programs, cash awards, and scholarships initiated by the government for medal winners. He emphasised the government’s commitment not only to building infrastructures but also to collaborating closely with different Sports Associations to promote sports.
Further, Sangma called upon the youth to stay focused and to channelise their energy in the right direction, urging them to become productive and responsible citizens.
