Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet, in a meeting on Friday, approved the extension of the terms of both the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) for an additional six months. The extension, beginning on March 5th, comes in response to the councils’ request for an extension of the delimitation committee.
Both councils had earlier sought an extension for the delimitation committee, which was granted by the Governor last year. The proposal for further extension was examined by the Department of District Council Affairs (DCA), and upon Cabinet approval, recommendations will be sent to the Governor for final approval, according to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
In addition to the extension, the Cabinet addressed other agendas, including the approval of normal Service Rules by the forest department. The Meghalaya Forest Subordinate Technical Service Rules, 2024, was also approved during the meeting.
Furthermore, the Cabinet passed amendments to the Meghalaya Telecom Infrastructure Policy (MTIP), aligning it with changes made by the Government of India. The policy, originally implemented in 2018, required adjustments to comply with the national policy.
The Cabinet also deliberated on the Meghalaya Program for Adolescent Well-being Empowerment and Resilience, known as MPOWER. Under this initiative, the State Human Development Council, chaired by the Chief Minister, will oversee implementation. At the executive level, the Chief Secretary will serve as chairman, while at the district level, Deputy Commissioners will head the committee.
