Independent MLA from Meghalaya’s Mawphlang, Syntar Klas Sunn passed away at his residence on Friday at around 5 pm. Sunn, 62, succumbed to COVID-19, doctors said.

According to DHS Dr Aman Warr, the MLA was not vaccinated as yet.

“The MLA passed away on 10-09-2021, at 5 PM in his residence at Mawngap,” Dr Warr said.  

A Rapid Antigen Test carried out post Sunn’s death revealed he was positive for Covid-19. 

Dr Warr said the funeral will be held on Saturday, and all formalities will be completed before noon as per protocols. Strict COVID-19 SOPs will be followed.

The MLA from Mawphlang constituency had contested the Assembly elections in 2018 as an Independent candidate and won. Sunn was also an associate member of Meghalaya’s United Democratic Party (UNDP).

Meanwhile, condolences have been pouring in from political colleagues across Meghalaya.  

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma tweeted, “I am saddened beyond words by the sudden demise of Sh. S K. Sunn, Hon’ble MLA of Mawphlang. Bah Sunn always went above & beyond his call of duty to serve the people and I admired his hands-on approach to public service. My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones & admirers.”

MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh tweeted, “I’m shocked to hear of the passing of Mr. Syntar Klas Sunn, the honourable member of Meghalaya’s Legislative Assembly representing Mawphlang constituency. His passing is a loss to our state. My condolences to his family and to his constituents.”

Power minister James Sangma tweeted, “My heartfelt condolences on the passing away of Sh. S. K. Sunn, MLA Mawphlang Constituency. During his tenure, he contributed immensely towards the growth of the people of his Constituency. I pray the Almighty give his family the strength to withstand this tragic moment. May he #RIP.”

Sunn’s death is the third loss of a legislator in Meghalaya this year. Rajabala Congress MLA Dr Azad Zaman passed away on March 4 this year following a cardiac arrest. Congress MLA David Nongrum passed away on February 2 this year after suffering a cardiac arrest.
