Guwahati: Fresh incidents of gunfire and burning of houses were reported from Litan area in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Thursday morning, a day after the situation had reportedly calmed down.
According to sources, the firing began at around 9:50 a.m. when a group of suspected Kuki armed militants, allegedly carrying sophisticated weapons, crossed the Litan River and attempted to advance towards the opposite bank where Tangkhul community volunteers were stationed. The exchange of fire reportedly continued for nearly three hours.
Amid the tensions, a scuffle also broke out between women from the Tangkhul Naga community and security personnel after tear gas was reportedly used to disperse the crowd. The women were said to be unarmed.

The violence in Litan area dates back to February 7, 2026, when a Tangkhul man was allegedly assaulted during a clash involving some Kuki individuals. The incident subsequently escalated into wider hostilities between members of the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities, leading to arson attacks in which more than 50 houses were burnt.
The unrest has displaced hundreds of families from both communities, with many taking shelter in neighbouring villages and with relatives.
