Guwahati: Months after violence began in Manipur, the state has finally started deporting Myanmar residents staying in the state illegally.
On Friday, CM Biren Singh said in a tweet: “First batch of Myanmar nationals who entered India illegally deported today. Although India is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it has given shelter & aid to those fleeing the crisis in Myanmar on humanitarian grounds with a systematic approach.”
Ever since the violence began, voices in the Imphal Valley have repeatedly asked the state and central government to deport all Myanmar residents living illegally in the state along with ending the Suspension of Abrogation Agreement with Kuki militant groups.
Even though the Manipur Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the end of SoO with Kuki militant groups, the Centre has yet to confirm the same.
