Imphal: A sub-inspector of Manipur police was suspended on Wednesday in connection with the death of a man in police custody, allegedly after brutal torture by the Imphal West district police.

The suspension order issued by Imphal West SP Shivakanta Singh states that a departmental proceeding is being contemplated against sub-inspector Th Jitendro Singh of Imphal West district for his grave misconduct while on duty.

“In exercise of the powers conferred upon me under Rule 66 of Assam Police Manual Part-III do hereby place the above noted SI under suspension with immediate effect,” said SP Shivakanta.

The order further asked the police officer to remain at Reserve Lines, Imphal West district as his headquarters and to not leave the place without prior permission from the concerned authority.

He will get subsistence allowance as admissible under rules during the period under which he is placed under suspension, said SP Singh.

Meanwhile, local MLA RK Imo Singh met the family members of the deceased on Wednesday morning and assured of every possible assistance.

Arambam Nanao, 35, was allegedly picked up by a team of police from his locality on Monday and detained in connection with a debt recovery case

“Met the family members of the deceased at Khangabam Leikai. Assured of all assistance to the family including a government job to the wife of the deceased. The police official has been placed under suspension and let’s ensure his arrest and punishment as per procedure prescribed by law,” said MLA RK Imo Singh on his social media page.

It may be mentioned that Arambam Nanao, 35, son of (L) Dhananjoy of Sagolband Khangabam Leikai in Imphal West district, was allegedly picked up by a team of police from his locality on Monday and detained in connection with a debt recovery case. The same police team brought back Nanao at his home in the evening, and allegedly rushed him to the RIMS hospital after he fainted. He was declared dead at the hospital.

Meanwhile, family members and local residents alleged that the man died due to brutal torture by the police in their custody.

The victim is survived by his wife and three children, including a month-old baby.
