Imphal: Following an assurance by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to establish a market in Imphal for Mao womenfolks, a temporary Mao-Imphal market shed has been formally opened at Kabo Leikai Nongchu (North AOC) in Imphal West district on Friday.

Inaugurated by local MLA Losii Dikho, the Mao Keithel is aimed to uplift the womenfolks of the Mao community by selling vegetables from their farms.

The inaugural ceremony was also attended by Imphal West DC Th Kirankumar, CSOs leaders and Mao women, among others. Expressing his happiness over the market launch, MLA Dikho said such initiatives will not only bring people from the hills and valley closer but also improve the state’s economy.

“I am very grateful to our chief minister for the initiative, support and encouragement from the very beginning to bring the people together and to maintain the integrity of the state,” Dikho added.

Taking to Twitter, CM Biren Singh said, “Delighted to share that the temporary Mao Market is now open at North AOC. On this occasion, the women of temporary Mao Market visited and presented me some local products as a token of love.”
Your affection and support inspire me to walk the extra mile every single day, Singh added.

Earlier, CM Biren Singh also flagged off the daily bus services between Imphal and Mao to ferry the locally produced fruits and vegetables to Imphal.

Vegetables and fruits produced in the Mao area are known for their rich quality and are organic. However, due to a lack of market in the state capital, earlier farmers from the Mao region used to transport their produce to the neighbouring state of Nagaland.
