Manipur’s Surbala Laishram wins India’s first gold medal, Dinesh Naorem wins bronze at GAMMA world championship 

Imphal: Surbala Laishram Devi, a rising mixed martial arts (MMA) female star fighter from Manipur, has scripted history by becoming the first Indian fighter to win a gold medal at the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA) world championship 2021 in Amsterdam.

A resident of Khangabok Sorok Wangma Part -1 of Thoubal district, Surbala defeated Tomiris Zhussupova of Kazakhstan in the 115 LBS Striking MMA finals via decision. This was her first match after a long forced break due to a knee injury in 2019.

Meanwhile, Asian Championship gold medalist Dinesh Naorem could not compete in the semi-finals due to an injury and had to settle with bronze medal at the world championship.

Altogether, 33 fighters represented India at the five day-long mix martial arts world championship from March 23-27. Team India secured 11 medals at the world championship.
