Imphal: A 41-year-old man was arrested by Manipur police for allegedly spreading alarming and false information on social media about vaccination and wearing of face masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

As per reports, the person, identified as Khoisnam Shantikumar of Lairenjam Awang Leikai under Nambol police station, was arrested on Thursday night. He was produced before the chief judicial magistrate of Imphal West on Friday which sent him to police custody for five days till June 22.

The accused was charged under Section 505(1)(b)/505(2)/34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3 of the Pandemic Diseases Act, 1897. He was accused of uploading a video on Facebook and WhatsApp with the intention to spread false information and mislead the general public, said the reports.

The police are further investigating to identify his associates involved in sharing of videos and false information to take necessary legal action, the reports said.

According to reports, Imphal West SP K Meghachandra has appealed the public not to fall prey to such false information and propaganda regarding COVID-19 vaccination and COVID-10 appropriate behaviour and SOP.

He further warned that any individual or group having vested interest and involving in spreading false and alarming information to spread panic and create enmity among the public will be dealt with strictly as per the provisions of law, the reports added.
