Imphal: Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state, the Manipur police department continues to crack down on violators of rules and restrictions.

On Thursday, as many as 263 COVID-19 norm violators, including those failing to wear face masks, not maintaining social distancing in public places and spitting in public places, were detained as preventive measures to fight the coronavirus in the state.

They were released later after they were giving stern warning, said the police.

Meanwhile, an amount of Rs 1,04,100 as fine was also collected from the offenders as per law, the police said.

Those who violate the guidelines and restrictions shall be dealt with strong legal action under the National Disaster Management Act, 2005 and other appropriate laws, the police added.

So far, the police across 16 districts in the state have imposed fine from 1,45,499 offenders and detained 51,850 vehicles. An amount of Rs 2,21,96,260 has been collected as fine amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thoubal district tops the list with Rs 62,49,970 collected as fine and 66,970 offenders detained till date.
