Imphal: Human Rights Alert (HRA) executive director Babloo Loitongbam has criticised Manipur Police for arresting Sintha Laishram, the secretary general of the Committee Against Drug and Alcohol (CADA), Thoubal district committee, allegedly without any warrant on Wednesday.
Laishram was allegedly arrested for organising a protest meeting against the acquittal of Moreh Autonomous District Council (ADC) chairman Lukhosei Zou who was earlier apprehended with drugs worth several crores of rupees from his official residence in 2018.
In December last year, a special NDPS court had acquitted the Zour, who was then the chairman of Chandel ADC, in the multi-crore drug haul case of 2018 along with six others citing the failure of the prosecution to prove the allegation against them.
In a letter to the chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC), Loitongbam urged the commission to urgently intervene into the matter and ensure that human rights are not violated.
According to HRA, Laishram, a resident of Champrathong, Wangjing in Thoubal district, was allegedly arrested by a team of police commandos from his residence around 1:30 pm on Wednesday. The police arrested the human rights activist without any warrant and his family members cannot even meet him, alleged Loitongbam in his letter to the commission.
Laisharam has been currently detained in the lockup at Thoubal Police Station and officer-in-charge of the police station is not allowing any meeting without the permission of the SP. The SP, in turn, is not contactable, he stated.
EastMojo also tried to reach out to Thoubal SP Ibomcha Singh, but in vain.
“We shall be grateful if the commission could kindly intervene urgently to ensure that the rights of Sintha Laishram are not violated for carrying out lawful and legitimate human rights work,” added Loitongbam.
By the time of filing this report, the HRA team was at the Thoubal CJM court waiting for Laishram’s production warrant.
