March 1 marks a day of big celebrations in Manipur as three of its most renowned sporting gems were born today: Mary Kom, Laishram Sarita Devi, and Sandeep Singh.
Six times World Boxing Champion and Rajya Sabha MP Mary Kom turned 38 today. She entered the sporting arena at 15 and is now a household name across India.
‘Magnificient Mary’ holds the throne for the first of many, from the world’s number 1 in women’s light-flyweight ranking to being the only boxer in the world (in both male and female categories) to have won a total of eight medals.

Another bright name in the boxing field is Laishram Sarita Devi, who turned 39 today. Belonging to a unique brand of pugilists, she has won gold medals across four different weight categories in international boxing championships.
Post pregnancy, she stirred controversy during the 2014 Commonwealth Game in Glasgow after refusing to accept Bronze. She also had to face a one-year-ban due after the tournament.

The youngest of the trio is Sandeep Singh, who turned 26 today. A professional footballer from Imphal, Singh plays as a defender for Kerala Blasters. In August last year, he signed a one-year contract with the Indian Super League team for the season 2020-2021.
