Guwahati’s once-bustling restaurant scene may have taken a hit during 2020, but that hasn’t stopped a flow of new openings. One that has caught our eye recently is a bright and beautiful lawn space – Leaf Deck Café – overlooking the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, in GS Road.
Launched in January, Leaf Deck is charmingly informal yet deeply gorgeous; the airy dining room’s always packed, but in winter it’s all about the lawn, with its green and brown surroundings. Think sun-dappled tables, fairy lights, and leafy, herb-filled planters. City boys and girls descend in droves to soak up some rays, and couples for romantic dinners under the starlit sky.
24-year-old Iftikar Jenif, owner of the property, says, “The idea boomed in me when I saw that people were very much into outdoor spaces these days. Leaf Deck is supposed to be a pocket-friendly outdoor lawn cafe for the youngsters. We have blended inter-continental dishes with a bit of fusion from our side to keep up to the city’s taste-buds. The ambiance is designed in a way to make it tool like an urban jungle, thus the name Leaf Deck.”
Start with Blueberry Blast served in a highball glass, laced with wedges of fruits. If you want something thick, creamy, and crunchy – go for the Oreo Shake.
The kitchen is run by a team of expert chefs and the menu reflects their expertise. Divided by region, the food list’s a grand tour from Europe to Asia to Middle East.
Chicken Meatballs (Rs 149), Steak Burger (Rs 199), Grilled Fish with Pilaf Rice (Rs 299), European Rice Bowl (Rs 199), Cheesy Garlic Bread (Rs 99), American Breakfast (Rs 249), and Farmhouse Pizza (Rs 249) are some of their stars. For dessert, ask for their signature Choco Oreo Blast Chills (Rs 129) — unfailingly rich and sumptuous.
They also have a special combo menu, featuring popular delights such as Fish Steak + Mocktail (Rs 399), French Fries + Cappuccino (Rs 199), and Butter Chicken + Jeera Rice (Rs 249) among others.
Speaking about the USP of Leaf Deck and upcoming plans, Iftikar shares, “We have tied up with Lavazza– one of Italy’s oldest coffee brands – for fresh brews. We want to popularize the cafe as an event hub of Guwahati, where artists can come and showcase their talents in Open Mics, Standup & Acoustic Nights. I also have plans to open up a bakery.”
Go for it on a languid summer’s evening, it promises an experience to remember.
